Plastic water sachets are a common sight accross the African landscape, they litter the roads, float in the sea and gather on the once white sandy beaches, it is estimated in the capital city of Ghana alone nearly 300 tonnes of plastic waste is produced daily with only 2% been recycled in goverment schemes.
Africa’s Cool Bag is leading the way in sustainable development by making useful and attractive bags demonstrating that it is possible to increase the lifespan of plastic packaging and to help tackle the serious problems of environmental pollution not only in Ghana but elsewhere across Africa.
It is our mission to provide trade not aid. By providing opportunities we are enabling people in this West African country to use their skills to trade themselves out of poverty. Africa’s cool bag is a business not a charity demonstrating ethical business practises, paying a fair price for sustainable production and providing training and support to our team in Ghana.
We employ seamstress Jocelyn to head our operation in Ghana, she in turn employs local woman to help cut, wash and dry the water sachets ready for production. In 2009 three industrial sewing machines were donated to Jocelyn by The New Life Baptist Church in Northallerton, North Yorkshire with the hope that she could make a sustainable living from her talents as a seamstress.
Africa’s Cool Bag will reinvest in training and education by donating 00p from each bag sale to the project New Day New Life Ghana a charity which is supported by The New Life Baptist Church. New Day New Life run an orphanage and two schools and are committed to the welfare of orphaned and destitute children.
