Africa's School Bag

10 January 2012, Our trip to Ghana

Africa's School Bag has been created to address the issues of plastic waste in Africa. It is estimated in Ghana alone waste produced from plastic packaging amounts to nearly three hundred tonnes a day most of it been non-biodegradable. Africa's School Bag is leading the way in sustainable development by making fashionable bags from discarded plastic packaging. Our aim is to not only create employment but to help teach communities especially children the importance of recycling and safeguarding our environment as well as cleaning up the streets.

In three weeks I'll be on a flight to Ghana to take Africa's School Bag to the next level, for ten days me and the development manager will be working with our seamstress Jocelyn on the final designs of the bags and getting them ready for the market here in the UK. Jocelyn is now equipped with an industrial sewing machine which has been donated by the New Life Baptist Church here in Northallerton, North Yorkshire who are very involved in the New Day New Life Ghana project. To find out more about this project visit www.nlbc.org.uk and look at the fantastic work they have so far done. We hope to support this charity aswell as been able to help more woman like Jocelyn. Keep checking back for updates on our trip to Ghana.

Local school children collect and sort the sachets.
